Since the cables are not designed for this duty, there can be significant signal attenuation and distortion. We have computed the propagation characteristics of a typical PLC signal along a single-core cable having two, 3-mm thick semiconducting layers, using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The PLC signal suffers significant attenuation for two different values of layer conductivity o. With o= 10-3 S/m, attenuation is caused by radial charging and discharging of the semiconducting layers.
